Learner readiness
Over the past few years we’ve really noticed a shift in needs, expectations and attitudes from learners in our workshops.
Whether it’s face to face or virtual, the reality is participants show up having had little time for the pre-read or prep, they’re often overwhelmed, distracted and worried about the impact of being away from the business.
Here’s a little of how we’ve been responding and what’s working:
1. Create space for participants to connect with self, each other and, in doing so, create an opportunity to simply breathe.
2. Ensure we give appreciation for what IS working. Reflect on successes, the impact and difference they are making.
3. Allow time for offloading and sharing stories to create a sense of belonging and “I’m not the only one” connections.
4. Offer practical tools and behaviours they can use to solve problems, reduce their to do list and build confidence to have the conversations they have been avoiding.
5. Allow time to rehearse key conversations using their new skills, behaviours and tools so that they return to their roles well prepared and ready.
6. Discuss and plan for new habits and how they will support and challenge each other to stick to what they’ve committed to.
From a design perspective; less is definitely more. Allow more time for discussion, making connections and formulating action plans. Ensure there’s some fun along the way and build in mechanisms for follow up and further connection; we've found that learning partners, coaching and project work all work well here.
